  1. Buy a one owner used family car. Not s**y, but reliable and safe. At $1500, you should be looking at 10-12 year old Ford Taurus and Merc Sable vehicles. Make sure you buy one with the 3.0L V-6 engine as it is much more reliable than the 3.8 engine. By the time a Japanese car like a Civic or an Accord is worth $1500 it's worn out and a piece of junk.

The car buying adage is, buying new, buy Japanese, buying used, buy American. Stay away from the Korean cars, they are unreliable and hard to fix.

  2. Nice suggestion from retired mech, great idea. You could also check out car auctions, stock surplus, impounded cars, suffice it to say, possibilities galore.

Have a look at these, they might bring fresh ideas:

  4. Dude im lookin for a car myself, ill be driving in a few months. Craigslist.org is a great place, Honda civics are great and you could prolly find a mid 90s civic for under $1500. Also toyotas are good, both hondas and toyotas get good gas milage (mid 30s) and run for thousands of miles (my friend has a 88 civic go for over 400,000 miles!).

  5. Some smaller dealerships offer older models for cheap. Otherwise, I'd check the local newspaper classifieds. You could even check out Craigslist.com or eBay motors.
