We are there on holiday and don't mind doing something different, so Indian/foreign food isn't out of the question, we are staying at the Holiday inn so the closer to there the better but all options considered! cheers

  1. Don't worry there are lots of meadows there.

  2. There must be some feed stores open.

  3. New Zealanders are not very big on traditional Xmas lunch/dinner. You have to remember that Xmas here falls in the middle of summer. Most people head to the beach (if it's not raining - which it often is). Having a traditional hot roast dinner beside a blazing fire works well in the Northern Hemisphere but is a tad bizarre down this way. Because of this, the restaurants here don't cater for Xmas diners or decorate their premises to the extent that English restaurants do. So your chances of finding a restaurant that is in full Xmas mode will be difficult. You'd have a better chance if you came in June (winter) because a number of restaurants put on Xmas meals to make the Poms, who missed out at Xmas, feel at home :-)

You'll have no problem finding a vegetarian meal but you may have to bring your own funny hats and crackers :-)

You could, of course, join the locals at the beach. Modern barbecues have moved on from  the traditional meat-fests and vegetables are no longer considered the work of the devil :-) Mind you, you might still get some funny looks if your fare consists entirely of non meat products. Just make sure you have a dozen ice cold Speights with you and you'll be welcomed with open arms however many carrots you have tucked into your chilli-bin.

    Good luck.

  4. Check both these sites out.  They have reviews posted by diners who have used the restaurant.  Bound to be something there that suits.

    www.time2dine.co.nz

    www.dineout.co.nz

  5. Any restaurant would do up a vegetarian meal !

Best thing though (as I use to work in the hotel industry in NZ)  when you ring up and reserve your table mention to them you are a vegetarian - that way they pass that info on to the chefs and they know well in advance to be prepared.
