I work for a company that uses a ton of saran wrap. It's a pizza place we wrap the dough after we stretch it, we wrap the pizza after we sauce and cheese it then we wrap again for you to go home, and we use it to cover our counter on the make line. Now where is a place I can tell my manager about that recycles saran wrap in large quanities, that is my least favorite part about working there is the wastefulness and harm to the earth.

  1. Unfortunately most recycling firms are unable to recycle saran wrap.  Check your local recycling agency to see if they accept it.  I bet they don't.

One of the biggest problems with recycling saran wrap is contamination by food and other sources that are wrapped in the stuff.  It sounds like most of your wrap is contaminated by dough and other stuff, so I would be extremely surprised if there is any way to recycle it.

Good idea though.  You could look into cardboard recycling for your business.  I bet they go through a lot of cardboard.  Good luck!

  2. This is a good question and there is probably no easy answer.

My feeling is that your pizza place needs to find ways of avoiding the use of saran wrap.  Not every pizza place uses the stuff so it should be possible to re-design your processes to avoid the need for it.  There might be a need for more cleaning of surfaces and utensils but there could be an overall cost saving and the planet would certainly benefit.  The food might benefit too because there are some concerns about the chemicals in saran wrap getting into foods, particularly fatty foods such as cheese.

I'm glad you are concerned and hope you find an answer.
