  1. I never seen a kit like this before, but you can buy a SKS that takes AK mags. They are made that way.

  2. Tapco.com

    Also it's a Magazine not a "clip"

gawd I hate what the media has done to guns. :(

  3. The SKS (regular model rifle) magazine is a different animal than the AK47 magazine. The are not directly interchangeable. I've heard the "kit" that you can get for an SKS, to be able to use AK47 magazines, requires some machine shop/gunsmith modifications to the receiver of the SKS for the kit to work at all.

I believe the SKS-D and/or the SKS-M (model D, M) are already set-up from the factory to AK47 magazines. I read somewhere that your just better off leaving the original box magazine on the rifle (much more reliable that the after-market stuff) or trade it in on an SKS model D.

    *****EDIT*****

See the link below. They go into some more details on the current state of SKS offerings & the "magazine kit" stuff.

They do sell SKS already set up for AK Magazines.

  4. The SKS never had a detachable clip. It only swung open from the front. I have never known anyone who stuck an aftermarket 30 rd clip on their SKS and did not have problems. Better off leaving it alone. The Russians didn't design a detachable mag for the SKS for a reason.

And I personally don't know of anyone who makes a conversion kit that allows an SKS to take an AK mag.

  5. Lance-

That is actually an aftermarket kit that has been installed on that rifle.

I used to work in a gumsmith shop here in California, and used to install those on a regular basis until it became illegal in this state to modify them that way.  Its a pretty nice alteration to the rifle.

Anyhow, just a word of warning before you make that change, please check with your local regulations about it.  That could be considered an alteration that places the rifle into an Assault Rifle Category that could get you a Felony Prison Sentance.  Just be careful and double check the regulations in your area.

Now as for where to get them?

Cheaper Than Dirt used to sell them.  I don't know if they still do.  I know that when I was working in the shop, we used to get them from Midway or Brownells.  But again, sometimes they may not ship depending on the state you live in.

There is another source called Numrich Gun Parts.  Anytime that we used to have odd things come into the shop, they would ALWAYS have it.  Though sometimes they were not the cheapest place to get it, but they always had it or knew where to get it.

Just for the record, the other person who told you that SKS's were never manufactured with a detachable magasine is correct.  I collect SKS's.  Their original configuration never included a detatchable magazine.  If your friend's has a detachable magazine, it was installed as an aftermarket option or he installed the kit himself.

All SKS's were originally fitted with an internal 10 round magazine that had a release latch on the bottom and the magazine is on a hinge that swings down to open the well.

I have 15 SKS's in different models and styles, (all Russian or Yugoslavian, none of the Chinese Cheapos), all of them are equipped the same way.  They are top loaded with a 10 round stripper clip that is placed into the bolt.  When the rifle is empty, the bolt will lock to the rear, just like a Semi-Automatic Pistol, you insert the stripper clip, push the rounds into the magazine well, retract and release the bolt, and away you go.

Just for the record, the Russian and Yugoslavian Rifles are a much better choice than the Chinese Norinco knock offs.  The parts are all much better quality, these rifles are normally more trouble free, and normally shoot more accurate.  I have had a couple of the Chinese rifles in my collection, they are all gone now.  If you have one of the Chinese ones currently, I would suggest that you trade up to one of the Russian or Yugoslavian ones.  You will definately see the difference in parts quality.  No, the parts are not interchangeable from the Communist weapons to the Chinese weapons.  The parts will not fit.

Anyhow, I hope that answers your question.  Good Luck!

  6. well, let's start at the top. First, the AK does not use a "clip". it uses a magazine. Available in 30 and 40 rounders, you can obtain these from shooter guide, brownell's, and dozens of other places that have ads in the "shotgun news" which you can obtain at barnes and noble or other book/magazine stores.

On the SKS, I have seen several detachable magazines, both 30 and 40 rounders made for them that resemble the Ak mags, but are a different design on top to fit the SKS. You simply take the sks apart, remove the original 10 round non detachable magazine and put the firearm back together. Some of these work well, some are junk. Back when we first started selling SKS rifles in the shop, I did see an after market kit that allowed you to use true AK mags as you noted, but I have not seen one of those kits in several years.

sorry I can't be of more help.

    Shoot safe
