look for a used bike. ask at your lbs, to see if they know of any opportunities. also, craigslist and your local classifieds. a good MTB new will cost $500+

"Good"? You can't. A bottom end bike will cost at least $250, and that would be on sale.

Craigslist or newspaper but NOT a department store although thats the price range youre in. I would still try to find a used good bike rather than a new crappy one. Good luck
