  1. $330 for a perception prodigy at REI; and I love mine; its great fun.  The "package deal" is $385 (less 10% if you are a member) with PFD (life jacket) and paddle. I know that's higher than you want to pay but its as cheap as you are likely to find for a new kayak with necessary gear included. Craigslist is always good, but buyer beware... can't return it when you find out it leaks. Here's the REI one, and I'm sure there is an REI near you.

  2. You could always build one.

  3. You can sometimes find a hardshell or inflatable kayak for that price on Craigslist or eBay.  Try craigslist before you check out ebay. There you can find a local seller, so that there are no shipping costs. Kayaks are very pricey to ship.

    Check it out here:

The best place to get good gear and advice on boating and boats is your local paddling club. I learned to Kayak by joining a club. It's a good way to network with other boaters, get free lessons, try out boats, and is usually an excellent source for finding affordable boats and gear. Do a google search of any local kayaking and canoeing clubs in your area. Boating clubs typically have a newsletter or a website with affordable used gear.

Here are some clubs in your area:

    Association of North Atlantic Kayakers

34 East Queens Way, Hampton, VA 23669

    Blue Ridge Voyageurs

    Reston, VA

    Coastal Canoeists

505 Winterberry Drive, Fredericksburg, VA 22405

    (540) 371-3631

    Richmond Whitewater Club

    Smith River Valley Canoe Club

15 Cleveland Avenue, Martinsville, VA 24112

You should also check the want adds of your local newspaper. I've bought and sold a couple of used boats there as well.

    Good luck, and happy boating.

  4. Best suggestion here is this one above me.  400 or so is about the lowest you can go for the minimal equip and a low end kayak, unless you go used but then you dont know what you are getting...

  5. you could  buy a cheap one at wall-mart or some store like that.   but if you want a good, reliable one , bass pro shops or ***** sporting goods are great store to buy kyaks
