It depends on the substance you are trying to filter. If it is just particulate I would use just a standard dust mask. If you are trying to block VOCs (spray painting) then you will need an respirator with cartridges that will handle the hazardous material. I would contact a viable safety supply house and ask for the cartridge to use for the chemical. If you use the wrong cartridge it could be damaging to your heath.
