  1. they are a thing of the past. most people continually cut themselves with them--thats why they all wore beards.

Get him a nice electric razor.

  2. Lets look at this logically.

Where do we normally see straight razors?

    Barber Shops, Beauty Salons.

    Where do they get them?

    Barber Supply stores.

Look in the yellow pages under 'barber supplies' or ask a barber or beautician where they buy their scissors and razors. That's the best place to start.

  3. A straight razor is over  3 1/2 inches allowed for folding knives "in 39 states"  so -- antique store ??

  4. Go anywhere that will sell knives.  Even look at walmart.  Ace hardware usually has a selection of case knives.  they may be able to order you one if they do not have one.  At the flea market people sell them with other knives.  If you are around atlanta i can tell you plenty of flea markets that have them.  On line i know i could search and get them.  look in the phone book for a cutlery store in your area.  You may even be able to go to a barber shop and get them to order you one through there supply company.  I have two or three of my own but i rarely shave and these are high maintenance if you do not get in a good habit of a few hits on the leather everyday.  It is an art to shave like this so unless he is just ecentric he will not use it long.

    Good luck

  6. Your best bet would be to check a local barber or beauty supply store. They likely won't have a classic straight razor but they may be able to order one for you. The next best thing is to get a "hair shaping" or "nape razor". Ones I commonly see are made by Fromm, Personna and Feather. They are considerably less expensive than the classic straight razor and a lot less maintenance. When the blade on them is dull, you just replace it with a new one. They will however give your bro the feel of what it is like to use a classic straight.

Once you have that, go to a Wal-Mart or a Drug store and look in the shaving section. There you can find a suitable shaving brush and shaving soap (usually William's Mug or Van Der Hagen) to give with the razor. Then go to a dollar tree and buy a mug, small basket and shrink wrap, put it all together and presto! A complete inexpensive intro to straight shaving gift basket.

Check a few on line resources such as "Straight Razor Place", "Badger and Blade" and the like for some downloadable manuals on how to properly use a straight razor. He'll appreciate it.

It is true, straight razor shaving is an art but one that is growing in popularity due to it's superior results. Sometimes the old timers knew what they were doing.

    Best of luck!

  7. new specialty store in malls called the close shave however they are dangerous

  8. 1. Check the legality of owning a straight razor.

    2. Antique dealers are about the only place you will find one, and be prepared to sit down when you hear the price.

    3. Take your new razor to a qualified knife sharpener and have them flatten the edge for safety reasons.

    4. Go buy an electric razor
