Here in the Philippines, you can find it in the wet market, at any stall that sells spices and condiments. "Tawas" is what they call it, and you can get humongous lumps, the size of your fist.  Ground to a powder and mixed with calamansi juice (the local lemon), it's the classic formula for antiperspirant (and skin whitener).  Applying the powder to mouth sores ("singaw") also cures it quickly (but it really stings).  It's also used in making pickles crisp: soak in a solution of alum, then rinse, then pickle the gherkins in vinegar and dill.
