Where can i buy an Axolotl in NJ?

I was just wondering where i can buy an Axolotl in New Jersey? i really want one!

  1. For a true axolotl, you'll probably need to have one ordered through a pet store.  Another option to consider is to get what's commonly called a "mud puppy".  There are six species in North America, all in the genus Necturus.  They look and act just like an axolotl, with the bonus of being extremely cheap.....as they are often available in fishing bait shops for a buck or so each.  Mud puppies also tend to get quite a bit larger than the average axolotl (up to 13 inches or more).

    They can sometimes be a touch aggressive, and should never be housed with fish or crustaceans that are even remotely "bite sized"; but they are incredibly cool critters to watch as they plod around a tank bottom.  They can be found in most parts of New York, so I would guess they should be a fairly common item in bait stores in Jersey.
