  1. Hey, I live in Maryland too, and maybe can help you out. What are you looking to pay, and what do you need from a bike?  Are you looking to cruise to the corner store, train for 50 mile races, ride on the C&O canal towpath?  And do you really need a woman's bike?  If you are petite, have narrow shoulders and small hands, you probably do, but if you are are larger framed like me, a men's bike will do just fine. Sorry to ask questions and not give answers, but providing more info helps a lot!

    EDIT:

I just saw your extra info, and at your height, a men's bike is better.  Women's bikes are made for chicks under 5'4, and you likely won't find a WSD for your size unless you go high end. If you are just looking for something cute to cruise around the neighborhood on that is a feminine looking ride, check out http://www.electrabike.com/home/

These are retro-style bikes that are fun, and many have gears as opposed to being a simple single-speed.

  2. The bike you posted a link to is a cruiser with only one speed.  I used to have one of those, and it was h**l to commute on.  Because there was only one speed, I got too tired to quickly, and ended up walking the bike most of the way to my destination.  Not a good thing when you have a 10 mile round trip.

I have had a cheap Walmart Roadmaster, and it was great.  15 speeds were a great relief.  If someone was going to GIVE me a new bicycle for free, and one was a 50 dollar roadmaster, and the other was a 150 dollar cruiser, I would pick the 50 dollar roadmaster any day.

Walmart Roadmaster multi-speed bikes are cheap, and good if you aren't planning on racing them or going on a long trip on one.  The components are low end, and you will need to put liners in the tires to protect the inner tubes against puncture, but it is an decent bike, at a very attractive price.

Just remember, to prolong the life of your transmission, never shift gears while you are putting alot of tension on the chain, such as when you are going uphill, etc.

Also, you don't need suspension to ride on the street.  You will learn quickly to stand up a tiny bit on the pedals when you see that you are going to hit a bump.  Also, a gel seat cover would be a good investment, if you are going to ride a few times a week.  Can greatly minimize soreness of the bum.

I was recently given a Kona (expensive mountain bike) which has suspension.  It doesn't prevent a sore backside, or even minimize it, when riding on the street.  Doesn't do much to prevent hand soreness either.  You will experience some level of both no matter what you do.  Well, unless you want to buy an expensive recumbent road bike, that is.

  3. Don't know where you should look, but think about what you'll be using the bike for before you make a purchase.  That bike is nice, but if you plan on using it for anything other than a leisure ride on a flat surface you might want to think about getting one that has more speeds (you can't shift on that bike, so going uphill will be torture)

  4. It really depends on what you're looking for and how "real" you are about using it - often vs. occasionally.

You can get a women's Schwinn at target for around $100 - but they're cruisers, and Schwinn is no longer the "Schwinn" of yesteryear in terms of quality  - but they're better quality than WalMart's offerings.  I bought a Schwinn Roxie cruiser last year as a starter bike and liked it - but eventually moved on to a $300 Raleigh.  The Roxie's great - but noisy, no suspension if you ride with any regularity, and heavy if you plan to put it on a car rack or mass transit.  You'll be happier in the long run if you can manage to invest $300 in a lower-end name-brand bike store model like a Raleigh or a Giant.  Lighter - better suspension, better built, made to be ridden.  If you plan to do more than just once around the block, you'll need something with gears and good suspension.

You can find Target's offerings by typing in Schwinn on their website - there's a Southport Women's Cruiser for $119 that looks interesting.

  5. wal-mart where you live they are about $59-$194 but please take note (you can put what you want in one trek has got them for $750-$8,500.00 so you get my point right you get what you pay for)

  6. Thats a pretty good price for that bike.

    Hope this helps.
