  1. Unfortunately ferrets are not legal to be held as pets in California.

They were banned many years ago based on ridiculous "study" conducted by several DVMs.  This study actually stated a reason to ban them was that they liked to eat the brains of babies!

These are all shelters in Ca that have ferrets

Just remember they are illegal in Ca and you could be risking fines, having your ferret taken away, and possibly jail time.

  3. Ferrets are deemed illegal in California because they pose a threat to native wildlife, the agriculture interests of the state or to public health or safety are termed "detrimental animals". Only zoos and educational programs are allowed to keep them with a license.

So, you're not going to find anywhere in California where you can buy a ferret. If you want to work with ferrets, look into volunteering at your local zoo or educational program that has some.

  4. For the very apt reason stated above, ferrets are banned in our fair state, since they are clearly a threat to our children and crops and a menace to our structured society et cetera and et cetera.

Officially, you would not be able to find a reputable breeder from which you can "buy" ferrets, since it's illegal and all, and really if there's one thing a breeder should be it's legal. Unofficially, if you want to acquire a ferret all you have to do is look on the internet. There is no shortage of ferret "rescue" sites that look to rehome these pets. Here's a few; using the search engine of your choice will bring you more satisfactory results, perhaps:

You could smuggle one in, but that is not responsible; you're intentionally putting your pet at risk to be confiscated and euthanized.

Remember, please, that there is a risk to your pet. Please peruse the following pages:

To help you figure out whether you can provide a pet with a safe home and the proper resources. You can usually find an aisle devoted to ferrets in your pet store; if that fails, you can fall onto online stores. As for veterinary care, here:

for veterinarians that will treat ferrets. Make sure there is one close to you before acquiring the pet.

Lastly, for heaven's sake, please educate yourself about your pet before you adopt, and join an online forum to ensure that you will always have a reputable support system--two excellent forums below:

You might be able to find ferrets for rehoming there, as well, and placing a regular ad on Craigslist couldn't hurt.

Best of luck on your quest.
