  1. The supermarket called Paiz in guatemala  has an on line service.  I ordered from California and paid with my credit card on line and they delivered for free. You choose the time of delivery (usually within a 2 hour Window) example between 8:00 and 10:00a.m. etc.  You need to give them the name of the recipient, the address and phone number.  Their website is easy to navigate and you can see the specials of the week.  They also have a phone number if you have any questions.

You chose the market near the area where you want the groceries to be delivered.   I tried them several times. and never had any problem.  mostly for Christmas and other holidays.

  2. As a resident in Guatemala, and an American food lover, my suggestion would be to send the money. Generally speaking, most products are cheaper to buy in the US and send there; however food products are not usually so. Most foods are available, tho at a higher cost and lesser name-brand choice than in America, at Paiz, as formerly mentioned. But, with my experiences, most items average a cost double it's worth to send it, and to purchase in Guatemala, you generally pay about double the American cost, plus profit for the vendor... with the exception of food, which is usually just double or under the American cost, depending on availability there. Sending money would enable the receiver to purchase what they want, how much they want, and when they want it, without risk of it going bad on them or getting lost in the shipping process. But, there are still things that are hard or impossible to find in Guatemala... like in my area I cannot find good pepperoni or cheese.... so I love to receive those in the mail! (Just check expiration dates to make sure they'll last during shipping time!)

As far as the on-line part of it, if the receiver is in an area where an on-line service would actually deliver directly to them, they're probably already in an area that has a good variety available somewhat to them anyways. If they're in an area where on-line services will not deliver, the food is probably not as available either. Either way, my suggestion would be the money rather than the food. Good luck!

  3. You are better off wiring money to the recipient via Western Union or similar and letting them buy locally.  Your dollar will go a lot farther that way.  I seriously doubt any online service has put up the export license money for international grocery shipment anyway.  Grocery margins are just too thin and most countries will want to protect their local grocers against competition outside their borders.

  4. It would be cheaper to send them the money.
