I have searched, but I can't find what I want. I want a HD player with only three speakers. Does this mean I have to buy them separate? How do I know what brand will go together?

  1. HD players (Blu Ray, HD-DVD) have a full surround sound support. The speaker/amplifier/reciever packages have a minimum of 5 speakers and a subwoofer.

Since you require only three speakers, I am guessing that you are interested in only front-left, front-right and a subwoofer. If you want good audio quality, you'll have to make such a combination for yourself after buying a good receiver and hearing out various speaker models. You'll be able to use the system only in Stereo mode.

A  lot of computer speakers with built in amplifier come in such packages (2.1) too but the sound quality is not very good.

If you are opting for the center channel instead of the subwoofer, it'll be a waste since for using the center you'll have to decode the sound to all the channels and then you'll miss out on the rear speakers.

If you are going for HD player and want to really enjoy, I suggest that if you can't set up a full surround system, you opt for a virtual surround system. See the links below.
