  1. I've been a Zookeeper for almost 18 yrs. now and have/ currently do work with Pygmy marmosets. They do not make good pets (as is the case with all the primates) and are extremely costly. That is, if you manage to find one. We recently looked for a male to pair with our young female and he was $5,000. No kidding. They are hard to find as no more have come into the country. Another thing to note, even though they are small, they have a mouthful of very sharp little teeth.

Not only would you have the price of the animal, but also consider the permits, large caging, food (live invertebrates, callitrichid gel diet, veggies, fruits, saps),enrichment items, medical care and vaccinations, etc. that would go along with the responsibities of owning one. And really it's not a good idea to have just one, they live in Family groups. In fact, the USDA requires that Primates not be kept alone. ( At least for Zoos)

Please consider another pet that is not exotic.
