  1. There are many reputable breeders out there; but one thing to keep in mind while you search, there are also bad breeders out there (Google "puppy mills' for more info).  Buying from a puppy mill has the unfortunate result of keeping bad breeders in business, so please research any info you may get.

If you are open to it, you can get your beagle and save a life at the same time.  There are several breed rescues out there (shelters who are dedicated to helping their favourite breed first).  These shelters have puppies, young dogs, and old dogs.  Another good thing about rescues is that the employees and volunteers also "foster" the dogs, which means they know more about the dog's personality and even have time to train the dog.  Lastly, you can save at least $500 in vaccinations as the shelter pays for that before you pick up the puppy... not to mention the cost of adoption is usually less than $100 versus the high amount you'd pay a breeder.  I've pasted some links for you below in BC as well as Washington (You can import the dog back into Vancouver, it just needs all of its shots and paperwork from the vet... I'm moving back to Canada later this year with my American dog and checked it out already.

If you can't find the Beagle you want from a rescue, try a regular shelter, as they get every breed.

Regardless of where you get your dog, be sure that when you get him or her, you train and socialise your dog with other dogs and different people.

  2. I would suggest contacting the Beagle Club of BC http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills... as suggested. You could also look on the CKC site or attend a local dog show (the lower Mainland is in Oct and is the largest indoor in Canada).

There does seem to be a lot of beagle rescues. I think most are the result of people not researching the breed well enough before they get them. Often there are retired show dogs that are looking to be placed too. The Beagle Club is likely to know of a dog that would fit into your family.

Whatever you do, find someone responsible. Good luck in your search!
