  1. You can't. The formats are too different, it's not just mechanical (perhaps you're thinking of VHS-C to VHS adapters).

The best thing, if you need a small number of conversions done, is to use a service bureau that will render the Betamax tape to your format of choice. You might find such a place locally, in the Yellowpages or on Craig's List; I have added a few links for online services.

If you need to do this often, you can find cheap Beta decks on eBay and other places. However, if you dub directly to a VHS deck, you can have quality issues without using a time-base corrector in-between (which any reputable service bureau will). This isn't usually an issue if you dub from VHS to a digital recorder.

  2. There is no "beta to vhs" converter or cartridge. Beta and VHS are different, competing, analog video tape formats. The information stored on the different tapes are stored differently.

If you have a beta tape and want it on VHS, try contacting the local TV station - They probably won't do it, but it is worth a shot. Many still use that format - there also may be a pro video person in your town who will, for a fee, do transfer for you.
