  1. New York City has, in fact, played host to such a rich and varied panoply of life that's it's tough to think of any single guidebook that contains it all. For street level detail, your best bets are the walking-tour guidebooks, of which there are hundreds. Let me offer a few suggestions, though -

If you're interested in movies and celebrities (as your questions seems to indicate) you might try: "New York: The Movie Lover's Guide" by Richard Alleman. It will help you find the actual locations where many of your favorite scenes were filmed, and offers enough trivia to exhaust even the most devoted film buff.

The most comprehensive guide to the structures of New York City is the AIA Guide to New York City. As you walk down the streets and look up at the buildings, and find yourself wondering, "Now, what the heck is that building? It looks so familiar/beautiful/spectacularly ugly," you can pull it out of your backpack and satisfy your curiousity.

Gerard Wolfe's "New York: Fifteen Walking Tours" is now five years old, and slightly dated, but still among the best general overviews of the city. It includes tours that will take you to less trafficked parts of NYC, including ::gasp:: the other boroughs.

Other options abound. There are walking tours for radicals, guides to the g*y sites of the city, books on its fauna and flora, detailed accounts of individual neighborhoods, and more. The city is famous for its diversity, and guidebooks reflect that. If you intend to stay in a particular neighborhood, you might consider purchasing a guidebook to that specific area, and getting to know it in greater detail. Alternatively, you could try a walking tour. Big Onion is among the best of the commercial operators, and the Municipal Arts Society probably offers the most sophisticated accounts of the city's many neighborhoods.

One last suggestion: If you really intend to visit every street corner, or at least the famous ones, you might try "Manhattan Block by Block: A Street Atlas," the indispensable guide to navigating the Big Apple. Enjoy your visit!
