There's really too much debate for a "best of" listing to be anything more than an excercise in intellectual wankery and I would highly recommend visiting as many places as you can in order to build your own "best of" listing.  This will be hard, but hugely enjoyable, work.

THAT SAID - www.london-eating.co.uk has a good listing of Best Ofs and i have found it hugely useful in identifying places to go and eat.  The comments are particularly useful.

My own tuppence worth, based on years of assiduous research, are:

- Best barbecue - Bodeans in Soho.  Bodeans Rocks!

- Best Chinese - Yming in Soho.  You will never find a better chinese restaurant - Christine who runs it is an angel and the food is to die for (not from as some in nearby chinatown...)

- Best French - Chez Bruce in Wandsworth or La Trompette in Chiswick.  Both stellar places which have great kitchens and differentiate themselves by the quality and (comparitive...) reasonableness of their wine lists.

- Best Deli - Selfridges food hall.  I want to go there when I die.

- Best Wine Shop - Selfridges Food hall.  Just gets better and better.
