I am trying to plan a unit of work where the end result is a collection of riddles about nature written by seven to nine year olds.

  1. anglo saxon riddles are rather rude, not really suitable for children.

as for stories, the choice is a bit limited after Beowulf but you can try here:

    http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/ascp/

    http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/index.ht...

    http://www8.georgetown.edu/departments/m...

these are things i've come across at university, hope they can be of some help

  2. I would suggest the Anglo-Saxon chapter in the historical novel "Sarum" by Edward Rutherfurd.

It contains a narrative of a ring-giving ceremony, a few riddles and a recitation from Beowulf.

Were you to read this to your class, they would have the opportunity to see what these riddles meant to the Anglo-Saxons, and the way they were actually used by bards.
