  2. I lived in Japan for nearly 5 years (Okinawa) and loved it!  The language is very difficult and I only learned a few phrases.  I would suggest you go to a used book store and see if you can find self-teach manuals.  Learn simple phrases like (excuse spelling)

Ko- nee - chee- wa:  Good day

Kon - ban- wa:  Good evening

    Oh-Hi-Oh:  Hi or Hello

Oh - Hi - Oh - go - zi - mus:  How are you? or How do you do?  (been a long time)

Doe - Moe - Arrigato:  Thank you

Doe - Moe - Arrigato go-zi-mus:  Thank you very much

Do - ee - Toosh - De - Moosh - Ta:  You're welcome (I always remember this one by thinking "don't touch the mustache!"

    and then ofcource,

    Sayonara....good-bye!
