  1. The best prices seem to be on Amazon or at Costco.

And you are correct not wanting to buy from stores on eBay ... there are still too many selling gray market cameras, pretending that they are selling cameras with US warranties ... they usually "give" the buyer a cheap tripod and lens cleaning kit and substitute generic batteries and charges, holding back the OEM products.

You can sometimes find good prices on perfectly fine Nikon lenses on craigslist in a city near you ... you can hold the lens in your hands and test it before you hand over your money.

  2. Thats good advice above. Be careful of any deals that are "too good to be true" particularly ebay

I always suggest to friends on a budget to explore the used market. Adorama and B&H both handle alot of used equipment I think Ritz does also. There may be local camera stores taht take used equipment as a trade in and then sell it at a good price.  Talk to themAs noted craigslist is also a good place.. With technology changing so quickly and many folks wanting the newest stuff there are often some great gently used cameras on the market

  3. If you are simply looking for the best deals on these cameras, sign up on fatwallet. Under the 'Forums' section you will find a lot of information about current deals. If you can be patient, then you can find really great deals from time to time.

If you are looking for a lower price point, I would also suggest looking at the D40. It is just as capable as the D60, and costs $200 less. Compared to the D80, you will lose the flexibility of using AF for non-DX Nikon lenses.
