  1. If you are somewhat healthy then you can find very cheap individual health insurance (as opposed to a group health plan through an employer).

The key to finding a cheap plan that still offers the coverage you need is to stay away from discount plans and small companies with rates that seem too good to be true.

Choose a large and trustworthy company like a United Healthcare, Blue Cross, Humana, Aetna, etc.

Here is some more information on finding a cheap health plan:

  2. Just remember that you get what you pay for. Your question is somewhat of an oxymoron, I don't believe there is such thing as cheap health insurance! If you find a cheap plan, look at all the little writing in the book. Usually they will tell you what doctor you have to see, what hospital you must go to, etc. This gets people in a lot of trouble because they assume that since they have health insurance they can just go to whoever and wherever, then they get a bill for the total amount and find out that the doctor or hospital was "out of network".  So just be very vigilant and read everything before choosing one. Many HMO's are cheaper than PPOs, but again, you are extremely limited where you can go. It also helps to get a high deductible if you are wanting to save money in the short term. The problem with this is if an accident were to happen, now you've got a $2000 or higher deductible to pay PLUS usually 20% of the bill. So if you are wanting to have a cheap monthly payment, you probably want to find a plan that has a high deductible and I believe you can get plans for cheaper if you have to pay a higher percentage than 20% of the total bill. Just keep in mind that if an accident does occur, your going to pay, and pay a lot. Good luck!

  3. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. Humana is a good company but they may not be the best for you. With health insurance you get what you pay for. Almost all companies will have basic policies for a reduced premium but those policies also have reduced benefits. With a cheap policy you need to understand what you are getting and, more importantly, what you are not getting. How smart is it if you save $30 per month on a policy to find out that what you need covered is not covered. The agent will be able to explain this to you. There is no extra charge using an agent.

Do not try to do this over the internet. It'll take you several days to intelligently compare all the plans available. Also, if you have any pre-existing conditions that might add a rider to the policy, cause you to be declined, or if you are out of the height and weight guidelines you won't know until you've applied and gone through the underwriting process.
