Ordnance Survey maps.  You'll need quite a few to cover the whole route, though.

There used to be a company called Quayle who specialised in Railway maps. But I'm not sure about the website address, I actually have one of thier books on the westcoast but it only covers London to Carlisle because they are in regional order, on the eastcoast it will go from London to Berwick upon Tweed.  then the scottish regional book will take over.

They are really precise with junctions groundframes sidings, station, signal boxes, it also tells you which signal box covers the operating area. You could try waterstones or an Ian allen book store.

My question to you is why do you need this sort of information?

there is a map book called Quayle Map which used to be sold in WHSmiths, but I gather that this is no longer published.

If you work within the railway there is the five mile diagram, but you would have to check with whoever you work with to get access to this.

Quale Maps are very much still available (Most W H Smiths on railway stations actually sell them!)

You can also look at specialist railway web sites such as "www.spadweb.co.uk" which has links to railway route learning maps that Train Drivers use whilst route learning.

One of the best places to get information is by looking on www.local-live.com which will give you fantastic overhead views of the ECML.

I sometimes use this whilst route learning as a geographical aid.  

Train companies such as GNER and WAGN (First capital connect) have road learning schools that will provide excellent information regarding the route and it's features and there is also the Network Rail "Sectional Appendix" but, unless you were in the rail industry you would find these items difficult to obtain.
