  1. The colour of the fabric has absolutely no bearing on how well it blocks light; you need multiple layers of tightly woven fabric. It could cost you $150 or more for the material you'd need for all three layers and the fittings. You'll save a significant amount of money by buying a light-blocking curtain pre-made from JC Penney or Sears.

  2. You can buy some very heavy fabrics at places like Michael's, Hobby Lobby and JoAnn's Fabrics. My advice is to also purchase some heavy canvas as well to place on the back side of the fabric to give additional weight and light repelling properties to as well as help reduce noise transfer between rooms.

  3. You can also look in local resale stores or the Salvation Army for fabric, curtains, sheets, and curtain rods.  Check out those near affluent areas for used items that are still new or in pretty good condition.  For online options, check out Ebay.com and Fabric.com.

  4. Save some money and use sheets. I make most of my curtains from sheets and save tons of money. If the light is really bad you can buy this great liner from Joann Fabric store. You don't have to hem it. You just cut it and sew it to the back of each curtain. It only comes  in white.
