It's hard to answer your question without something more specific.  

Two environmental groups that I very much admire (and send money to) are Environmental Defense (ref 1) and Natural Resources Defense Council (ref 2).  Their web sites have excellent information on pollution problems and recycling.

One source of pollution for which recycling is *clearly* the answer is disposable beverage containers - soft-drink cans and bottles, etc.  Recycling rates of used containers have actually been going DOWN for the last decade.  The solution is simple, but the beverage companies block legislation to require deposits that greatly increase recycling.
