I love to draw but my regular standard No. 2 pencils dont really work well for my drawings all the time, like they dont shade properly. So does anyone know what type of pencil i should use for my drawings and where i can find it? Thank you so much! :-)

  1. Go to Michaels. They have excellent pencils that do the job.If you live here in Chicago you can go to Utrecht or Blick Art Supplies.

  2. Most good art supply shops will have a range of pencils.

Pencils have different grades, ranging from very hard: 8H, to very soft:9B, the H denotes a hard graphite 'lead' and the B denotes a softer one.

The softer the graphite, the better for shading, I use a 2B, a 4B and for dark areas a 9B. I also use a 2H to draw in finer details, as the softer pencils will smudge.

You may find it useful to use a torchon (tightly rolled paper stick) for smudging, these can be found with the pencils at the suppliers.

I use Derwent, as they are quite local to me, I include their website that has a handy supplier guide, click on the planet.
