First, if you have older relatives, ask them. Go through old photos and letters and get names, dates and places. Go to ancestry.com or geneology.com and search your family name and location. You can post messages there. It took me 5 years, but I finally made a connection with a family member I didn't know existed and got all the information I needed. It's fun, but it takes a while. Also, you can check out Vital Records in your family's home town.
