Alex's Haley's largely fictional account of his search for an African ancestor in "Roots" (1976) is loosely based in part upon the tales told by his maternal grandmother, Cynthia Palmer.  Accordingly, it is this grandmother whose pictures appear on a "Roots"-related web site rather than a photograph of his paternal grandmother, Queen, who is the heroine of the fictionalized biography by the same name published posthumously in 1993.  

Alex Haley's maternal grandmother, Cynthia Murray Palmer, is the woman in the middle of the first photograph in the link featured below. Haley's maternal grandmother and grandfather, Will and Cynthia Palmer, also appear in a photo with his mother, Bertha, at the bottom of the web page. I can't find a picture of his paternal grandmother, Queen, who married another former slave named Alec Haley.
