I am looking for 3 things. Statistics, Methodology, and Recommendations.

1. What are the statistics of how well AA boys are doing in Homeschool settings? How do they do on test?

2. What is it specifically, that Homeschoolers do that works well with AA boys? Is there are method that seems to work better?

3. Are there things in general that helps your sons achieve? What recommendations would you have for non homeschoolers to supplement for what the schools are lacking?

I am with a group called Mocha Moms. We are African American mothers who have chosen to stay at home and raise our children. We would like to have information to present to our members about the advantages of homeschooling. Having seen the sad test score and high school drop out statistics of African American boys, we are interested in knowing if this avenue of learning will yield better results then others.

  1. I do not believe in supporting the division of races by segregation through exclusive groups,as I believe that we are all born with the potential to succeed. I believe there are many statistics that display the AA community in a negative light, and unfortunately I do not think that having a "AA moms only" group is going to help. The sad test scores and dropout rates are pretty much across the board,  and are prevalent in white communities as well......The only common denominator is PUBLIC SCHOOL.

  2. Page five of this PDF file from hslda has statistics regarding homeschooled minority students compared to publicly schooled minority students.

  3. Although many schools are underfunded and understaffed, I think the sad test scores and drop-out rates are an accurate reflection on the student and the parents.  Put race aside and consider the environments these students come from.  If a student has a desire to learn, then he will learn.  If a student has a desire to sell drugs, commit crimes, and ditch school, then that's what they'll do.  Parents should shoulder most of the blame for their children not doing well in school.  If parents would parent and not befriend their children, the world would be a much more productive place.

  4. I don't have the exact statistics, but

    http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/000010/20...

    has a paragraph that states

"Another important finding of Strengths of Their Own was that the race of the student does not make any difference. There was no significant difference between minority and white homeschooled students. For example, in grades K-12, both white and minority students scored, on the average, in the 87th percentile. In math, whites scored in the 82nd percentile while minorities scored in the 77th percentile. In the public schools, however, there is a sharp contrast. White public school eighth grade students, nationally scored the 58th percentile in math and the 57th percentile in reading. Black eighth grade students, on the other hand, scored on the average at the 24th percentile in math and the 28th percentile in reading. Hispanics scored at the 29th percentile in math and the 28th percentile in reading. "

  5. I am an African American homeschooler.

Here is some information on African American Homeschooling:

I am not sure there have been studies specifically on Af Am boys.  Here are some links to statistics on homeschooling that include information on gender/race/economics:

Here is some info about learning styles and different ways to teach.  I think this, combined with parental involvement, is the key to homeschooling:

Here's a recent article about Af Am Homeschooling:

  6. 1. I don't know of any statistics. Regardless of race, what makes a difference is what parents do.

    2. With ANY child, regardless of race, what works is whatever works best for that individual child--and if the desire is high test scores, expectations for high test scores and providing a means to obtain that. It might take some experimenting and really keen observation on your part to find what works best but let me say that if you have 2 sons, one could do super well with one method and yet another might do better with another. Has NOTHING to do with race.

    3. What helps students achieve is parents who are supportive, constantly looking out for ways to help the child grow, who have high expectations, and who are not over-bearing nor creating a stressful situation with too much pressure.

One definite way that homeschooling could help is that they would be less influenced by the common negative attitude at school about academics. It can become 'cool' to not care and they wouldn't be tempted to be like everybody else.

  7. as a sibling of 2 home schooled boys i can tell you that your boys will only do as well as you do at being a teacher, socializing them somehow, and keeping on top of them about school work and learning to interact with humans.

i think the statistics are skewed by parents who do a bad job at not only parenting but teaching

    get a good cirriculum

find ways your kids can be social and interact with humans

don't let your kids run wild

make them do homework, extra testing, and work harder. they'll thank you for it.

you have to learn to work hard in life becuase that is the most important skill in life and if you have to work harder learning to work hard, thats even better.
