  1. I bet the Sibigtroth ancestors were dirt poor farmers like mine and had no coat of arms or family crest.

If you want one of your own, you can always create one.

Families don't have coats of arm, they are awarded to individuals.

Most Americans seem ignorant of one very basic fact: in Western Europe and in the British Isles, there is no such thing as a "family coat of arms." A coat of arms is issued to one person, not to a family.  (ancestry.com)

  2. There is no such thing as a family crest. A crest is part of a coat of arms. Coats of arms do not belong to surnames.  They were and are granted to individuals and are passed down to the direct legitimate male line of descent.  Sometimes a female may inherit one if there is no male heir.

If you feel you, your father or your husband is entitled to a coat of arms, you must research your family tree back to the ancestor that was granted a coat of arms and then send your family tree to the College of Arms in England.  They will check it to see if they can issue you a coat of arms.

There are lots of peddlers on the internet, at airports, at shopping malls, in magazines selling coats of arms. Frequently what they have are valid coats of arms but what is not valid is they sell them like they belong to everyone with a particular surname and they don't.  Often times they have a small disclaimer in fine print.

Actually, there frequently are more than one man with the same surname, not all necessarily related, that were each granted their own coat of arms, all different.  No one peddler that sells them will have all of them. They don't need to in order to sell to people.  The only time they will have more than one is if more than one individual with the same surname from different national origins were granted one, then they will have one of each when in fact there might have been several of each.

See the links I am furnishing you under sources.  One is from the British College of Arms(they grant coats of arms and are the ultimate authority) and the other from the most prestigious genealogical organization in the U.S., The National Genealogical Society.

If this is a school project and I apologize if it isn't, please print off the links I am furnishing you and give them to your teacher.  Also feel free to print off what I have posted here.  We get a lot of students requesting this info for a school project.
