  1. You'll be fine in Montana.

I've been working on a mixed farm in Saskatchewan, Canada and it usually gets extremely cold in winter, up to -50F and cows were healthy as long as they were fed properly.

These were all European races: Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn, Limousin, Fleckvieh, etc.

I've also been in the north of my country, Argentina, and experienced temperatures above 125F and cows were ok too.

In this last case cows were Indian races such as Brahman, Nelore, etc.

  2. Cattle can stand considerable variations in temperature.  Mature animals are most comfortable between about 20 degrees F and 70 degrees F. Above and below those temperatures they expend energy above maintainance to control their body temperature.  two excellent references with energy formulas, nutritional requirements, etc. "Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle" and "Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle" published by the National Research Council.  They are available from the National Research Council in Washington DC or at most agricultural college book stores.  They are also available on line.

  3. as long as they have food and water they will survive

  4. HI.  Farming is lots of fun.  But, when you ask about temperatures, you need to keep in mind that a cow is not just a cow.  There are breeds of cow developed to exist in hot weather, and breeds that can withstand cold temperatures.

There are SO many different breeds of animal.  For a cold resistant cow, get highland cattle (Oh PLEASE get highland cattle).  They are SO cute, and furry.  Very furry.

No matter what you get, get a heated barn.  Nothing should be left out in the cold on subzero nights.

It's cheaper to buy animal feed in bulk.  You get better prices if you research what you plan to raise and raise what there is a demand for.  And, chickens are loud and smelly.

  5. as long as the have a barb the can d below zero go to your local feed and supply store they can help with food and stuff

  6. Cows, goats, horses, most livestock will do well in Montana.  They must be well fed and given shelter during winter.  The temperature can and will get well below zero. Take a look at this web site, it will help you out if you are wanting to start a small farm or ranch in Montana.
