  1. Look in the usual places for volunteering opportunities (I've listed them below). Sign up for opportunities that look interesting to you, or, contact organizations directly that provide some sort of counseling (domestic violence shelters, crisis hotlines, career counseling, etc.) and offer yourself as a volunteer.

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site, http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/

If you want to be a volunteer to help with the consequences of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina (they certainly need people who have a background in psychology), you need to register and prepare NOW. Here's a web site where you can register and start your preparation so that you can help the next time disaster strikes:

  2. To add to Jayne's list, check with your local court system to see if they have positions in CASA and domestic violence courts.  Red Cross also uses mental health professionals for those affected by post disaster crisises.  Goodwill also uses professional psychologists for rehabilitation and training.  Hospices also appreciate people who can help families cope with the impeding death of a loved one.
