Your local animal shelter!  

Definitely go there and not a pet shop, where they breed and animals for profit. Shelters won't charge you for anything except for de-sexing and vaccinations (so you don't have to pay again at the vet's).  You want your kitten de-sexed so it doesn't spray (i.e. pee) all over your house or get into fights when it's in heat.

If you go in the springtime there'll be lots which have been born and you'll have a good chance of finding a tabby. Otherwise you might fall in love with another little one.

There are so many animals at shelters who *will* otherwise be killed, you can give a kitty a good home for life and be doing a good deed :-)
