  1. It's hard to get a chinchilla for less than a hundred, but perhaps you can try a local breeder or check the local pet classifieds at craigslist.org.

Chins are easily frightened and being the focal point of 20 little children will probably take a couple years off the poor thing's life! Perhaps your best bet is an EXTREMELY well socialized chinchilla from a breeder who knows its personality, or an older chinchilla that is used to being around lots of people.

Chinchillas also need really large, wire cages for good ventilation and space, and such a cage is probably not ideal for a classroom.

I still agree on the other poster about a guinea pig being a better class pet though...

Whatever your choice, best of luck!

P.S. A lot is two words, and it's "their," not "there".. though in this case it's probably more appropriate to use "its," teacher. =)

  2. Do NOT get a chinchilla for a class pet.  They WILL NOT make good class pets. Trust me...watched one die from this very thing.

Consider a guinea pig. Anything other than a Chinchilla.

  3. I would not recommend a chinchilla as a class pet. Try a hamster perhaps. They are also much less expensive and easier to care for.

But as for your question, I have rarely seen any for less than $100. I also don't know of any place that will accept payments.

You could try local rescue shelters though.

  4. $80 or so (i think) in SF's chinatown on broadway between stockton and grant.

  5. To answer your question - you could try a shelter, a private breeder *might* accept payment arrangements (but don't hold your breath), or you could check your local classifieds.

My two cents on chins as class pets - I agree with a couple of the other posters, chins are not meant to be a class pet. For one thing, they're usually sleeping during the day and with all the commotion from your students, they won't be able to get the rest they need. This can cause a lot of stress for it and then lead to a very unhealthy chinchilla. I'm not sure what age group you teach, but loud, wild kids can also really stress out a chin and again, lead to health issues. Don't put a chinchilla through all of that stress, stick with a fish, hamster, guinea pig, or some other animal that isn't as easily stressed as a chin.

  6. try a rescue shelter!!! thats the best place to get a pet!!

oh and i should ask what grade do u teach??

  7. i was lucky and bought one for 50 but they cost about 150 and i dont know of a place that takes payments...why not just save up money for a while
