  1. contact the exmoor pony centre near to exmoor, they have ponies suitable for children all over the country, and can arrrange loans of ponies to good homes

exmoor ponies are suited to children, as they are the perfect size, sure footed, strong, and very gentle.

    good luck

  2. Sometimes it is better to get a smaller horse, or a standard sized horse, because ponies can have a tendancy to be less than cooperative. Because ponies are so often only ridden by children, they may try to get away with things, since they are not getting consistent training. Any horse not consitently ridden by someone who truly understands horses can quickly develop bad habits. This is not to say every horse or every pony will do this, but bad habits can develop in nearly any animal. If your daughter is only 8, you might consider putting her and her pony or horse into a training program, so that she does not become discouraged by the experience. Even if it is with 4-H, these clubs can be very helpful. Even better, you might consider getting a "bombproof" standard sized horse, or lease a horse, making certain it is appropriate for a rider of whatever level your daughter happens to be. Be certain to bring a very trusted and experienced person along to help you with your choice. This can help you bring a safe and fun steed home for your daughter.

An even better idea is to have her take lessons on various horses at a barn where she will learn skills to help her along, if she has not already done this. Good luck with your pony or horse experience, and I hope you find what you are looking for. Keep in mind that an 8-year old will be doing a lot of growing in the next couple of years, and safety in your selection should be your primary concern.

  3. I would contact your local stables, farriers and pony club and ask I they know of any safe school masters. You could also give her instructor a finders fee to help you find one. Good ponies sell through word of mouth.... good luck

  5. Oh I feel so sorry for you as I had this with My 8 year old daughter and it is just not fair the way people lie to you. One lady, who had a a 12'2 for sale and a daughter of her own said to me that this pony was so safe and 100 bomb proof especially on the road and on his own,so we drove miles to see him and in the menage he seemed ok but I said I would like to see him out on the road. She told me that she would never lie to me as my daughter was only 8 and all the sale talk and doesnt she look nice on him. Then  when we got out on the road he started walking backwards and spooking and I just said oh here we go. So I said can we see him in open space and he saw a woman walking her dog and he reared with my child on him, I ran over to her and said get off the pony. I got her, and the woman could not control this pony from rearing . she was ready to sell t hat pony to me and bargained on me not knowing what I wanted, but I knew ``i wanted safety and he was not.

So I sat one day for hours on the internet and found lots of ponies but they all seemed to be in yorkshire and phoned lots of people and they all said their ponies were so safe. However I was on the site late one night and  found one just down the road, I went to see him and fell in love with  his temperament, my daughter can go in the stable with him and fling her arms around him and I do not worry because he is just so kind. He does however have mild sweet itch that I wasnt told about ! the vet didnt pick up either but we have got him a boett blanket and all sorts of cream to help him and he is really doing well. He and my daughter have lessons twice a week and the teacher said he is so genuine and patient and we just love him  so the sweet itch is not a problem to us. We were lucky.  I am sure you will be too just hang in there and you will get the pony that is meant for you. There are some very honest people out there too because some ladies said that they wouldnt sell their pony  to me as my daughter was not experienced enough so that was good.  I know how you feel andI was exhausted for looking to but you will find the right one. have you tried the pony club.org I think, they advertiise  and the horse exchange. Good luck
