  1. Bonsai trees are expensive to buy because somebody has had to look after them for a couple of years (at least) before they look good enough to sell.

The most rewarding trees for beginners to grow would have to be figs. They are very hardy and easy to prune without killing the plant. The other good thing about fig trees is that they are very easy to strike from a cutting. Find a nice healthy fig tree, cut off the tip of a newly growing branch (or preferably 10 cuttings), stick it in some seed raising mix, cut all of the leaves off (except 1 or 2) at the end, and keep moist. When new growth starts to appear you can assume that it has gown roots, and you can repot it into a shallow pot with bonsai mix. It will take a year or two before it really starts to look good. Cheapest and most rewarding way of doing bonsai !!!!

ps Dont spend a lot of money on your first tree, your probably going to kill it anyway (especially if its not a ficus)

  2. 1. Bonsai are rarely cheap (inexpensive).

    2. You local garden centre may have some on hand or be able to get some for you.

You may be able to locate a bonsai club through a site on this link. They could be another source of help for you. Some of the members may even be growers/artists.

    Good luck and good growing.

  4. Bonsai are always expensive but I have found Bunnings have a reasonable price.

  5. have you looked at the QV market?
