  1. There are no free credit reports online for Canadians.

Canadians are allowed as many free credit reports per year as we can request, the catch is that these must be requested via telephone or mail.

The easiest way to request your credit report is through the automated verification systems used by both Equifax and Transunion. These systems will use information from your credit report to verify your identity (you will also need a valid credit card, although it will NOT be billed as a part of this process, they just compare it with your credit report). The down side is that if you are not entirely sure what is on your credit report then you may fail the verification process.

This method is still preferable as the turn-around time (time from the initial request to the arrival in the mail of your credit report) is about one week typically.

    Equifax:   1-800-663-9980

    Transunion: 1-800-465-7166

The second method is to send in a written request with copies of supporting identification (typically a photocopy of your drivers licence and a recent utility bill are sufficient). The turn around time for these requests are typically between 2 and 3 weeks.

As I said before you can request copies of your credit report as many times as you like. If you have an urgent need for your credit report (or you want your official credit "SCORE") you are going to have to pay for it through the Equifax or Transunion website (typically around $25CDN).

You can guestimate your credit score using your free credit report, however, by going to the following website and answering their questions. I've found that their FICO score estimator is pretty d**n accurate.

    Hope this was some help!
