  1. Your question is really too broad considering the amazing spectrum of cuisines available in Singapore, not just from the various major racial groups in Singapore & from the region, but also from many different international cuisines including from Russia, Austria, Brazil, Africa, Mongolia, Nepal, Spain etc. Not to mention the thousands of restaurants, food courts, hawker centers & other eating places.

If you want vegetarian, a few you could try:

    Lingzhi Vegetarian Restaurant (Chinese)

    #01-01 Far East Square,

    7 Amoy Street,

    Tel 65382992

There's another branch at 541, Orchard Road, #05-01 (Tel 67343788)

    Original Sin (Western)

    43, #01-62 Jln Merah Saga,

    Holland Village,

    Tel 64755605

Note that the Asian cuisine you get in Singapore & surrounding countries is the real McCoy, very much more authentic than in most Western countries. Which means there's many light, healthy & delicious dishes cooked in healthy ways. Not the overly heavy emphasis on deep-fried & greasy stuff in other countries.

Every cuisine would have its healthy fare and artery-clogging stuff. Just keep to a few general guidelines to eat more healthily: avoid deep-fried stuff, go for soupy versions, request for less oil & salt & more veg to be used, go for steamed & boiled stuff, ask questions about what ingredients are used & how the dish will be cooked. Many eating places will be glad to accommodate your specific requests, as long as you're not too outrageous! :)

Edit: About ur additional details, agreed that many vegetarian food items are very unhealthy but you just have to choose the right items. There's plenty of stir-fried veggies, veggie soups, steamed tofu etc. that's ok. And you can just choose the plain vermicelli with some stir-fried veggies & omit any accompanying deep-fried items. If you want even healthier vegetarian food, you'll probably have to visit a Buddhist temple! Or like what another person suggested, simply buy raw ingredients & cook at home (unless you're a tourist).

As for Indian curries, many of them actually use plain yogurt and not coconut milk.  So on the whole Indian curries are healthier but I prefer the taste of Malay & Thai curries with the coconut milk fragrance.

  2. in a singapore health food shop

  3. Try these:

Visit restaurants that offer grilled foods, salads, fresh sandwiches....

  4. I am from Singapore, we are a food lover's paradise!  All cuisines offer healthy choices (and unhealthy choices).  It's up to you to pick the healthy dishes and eat in moderation.

Chinese dishes offer many steamed options.  Indian food also offers many vegetarian low fat dishes like idlis and dosas.  Grilled tandoori, tikkas and kebabs are also healhy.  Malay food has grilled satays.

Just order healthier foods when dining out but better yet, cook you favorite meals at home so you can control the amount of fat, oil, butter, salt........you could always make healthier food at home.  I do that alot myself.

  5. I have never been to singapore, but I know all of the food down there is very high in fat, and starchy. If you order something at dinner get fillets, with vegetables. Try not to get too much starch, by avoiding thick breads and pasta.

Sorry I couldn't help more, but I hope I helped at least a little!

    <3 have a good weekend!
