  1. Kelp is a seaweed in the Alaria family.  It is an EXTREMELY high source of vitamins, minerals and nutrients.  It grows in shallow coastal waters with cold currents running through them.  It is shallow rooted, and can grow in excess of 50 feet tall in places called kelp forests.  The Japanese use a kind of kelp, called kombu, in their broths, soups and sauces, where it is often mixed with such things as shiitake mushrooms, onions, carrots, tamari or shoyu, bonito flakes or dried shrimp, and called kombu dashi or used as the basis for miso soups.

It is possible to ingest too much kelp, especially if one has an over-active thyroid gland (Bright's disease).  It is in fact possible to burn out one's thyroid gland by the ingestion of too much kelp, so please, as with all things, do your research and be moderate in your intake, definitely not exceeding 500mg of kelp tablets in any one day.  It is an extremely high source of B vitamins and trace minerals/rare earths, and is thought to be highly responsible for the good health, luxuriant hair growth, strong nails and slimness of Oriental peoples .
