  1. Talk to the homeless if you can. Churches, the welfare and shelters for the homeless are good places to look and ask questions. If any homeless person is in a shelter, they get a horrible place to stay but get meals. I know, as I became homeless after my divorce and was in two of the most horrific places you would want to be in. Women came in every night to inject drugs in their veins. The children did get coats and toys for Christmas. After that I was homeless in an older car my Dad got for me for a year. I am disabled but had to use my sister's address to get my government checks. I am in a Federally funded apartment and the water isn't even drinkable. The living room heater doesn't work and there are electric problems that have caused small fires in 3 outlets. I contacted the state and the board of health and they were nasty and rude to me and cited that I didn't need some outlets due to a grandfather clause. We are considered indigent which is a lot farther down than poor. If you have no underage children like me, you get $45 and I eat on this the whole month. The electric bills are outrageous as my apartment is all electric. I do get help with heat and I conserve energy and the bills are still very high. While I am certainly not corrupt, as I can't work due to several health problems, I am intelligent , have held good jobs in the past, but the government makes it hard to try to work. If you do, you lose your food stamps, your energy assistance and your rent goes up about twice the amount. While there is a cost of living increase each January........there really isn't anything you get to keep because your rent increases and your food stamps decrease. So...what cost of living? Many times the goverment keeps you in this situation , because many can only get minimum wage jobs and they still can't live on that. I have neighbors that I don't even talk to as they are drug addicts and are supposed to be evicted for drugs, as per the law of the government and the lease. They are not evicted unless they don't pay rent. I live in the state of NJ where corruption is rampant as well as pay offs to low bid contractors in order to save money. This results in many things not getting taken care of and costs more in the long run with temporary fixes. Don't know if this is what you wanted, but I have lived it. I am not a drug addict nor do I drink alcohol, so I am not abusing the system. I am just a victim of circumstances and intelligent but unable to work due to serious health problems. To give you more facts , I would have to do research. I lived it though. Yes, it's true some can work and abuse the system, but not myself and others who are good and decent people.

  2. I would start at the salvation army they could probably direct you to some help or have the info. themselves.

  3. There actually isn't as much corruption as you think there is, not in the homeless community, anyway.  A good source for info would be the National Coalition for the homeless, www.nationalhomeless.org.  Or you can try www.coalitionforthehomeless.org, which is the site for the Coalition for the Homeless.  Hope this helps.  I found them by searhing "homeless, coalition", but both are good organizations.  Either on can get you in contact with the coalition for your area.  A good reason to look into a coalition is that these are generally grassroots organizations that are largely volunteer driven, so they don't have their habds in very many financial pies.  Hope this helps!
