  1. Interlux's website is pretty thorough. It's www.yachtpaint.com.

PLENTY of boats are painted. Awlgrip, Imron, Alexseal, etc etc etc. All of your super-high-end finishes are paint, NOT gelcoat.

  2. A fiberglass boat is painted with Gel Coat, not paint! A boat or anything fiberglass is painted with Gel-coat in the mold first then the fiberglass is applied!

  3. Try this website:  http://www.cgedwards.com/

C.G. Edwards Ship Chandlery is Boston's oldest ship chandlery has carries Interlux paints, Devoe Paints, fiberglass repair supplies, and info on 'glass' hull maintenence.

  4. You can paint fiberglass just like any other automotive material. I have fiberglass bodywork for my race motorcycle and we just scuff up the gel coat and shoot paint on it.

    but..............

I learned my fiberglassing skills at a boat repair shop and we didn't paint them. We tinted our gel coat to get the right color and then shot the gel coat on the boats that we repaired. It is a LOT more durable than paint.

Here is a pretty good video on YouTube about gel coat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en-8SbhdF...

That video is for a repair and they brush it on. To do the whole boat, you would want to spray it on. I recommend getting a "cup gun" specially designed for gelcoat. There is one on this page: http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/Product_...

There are many other videos on YouTube that show how this is done. Basically, you will rough up the surface, spray a thick layer of gel, then sand smooth, and buff. My uncle and I did a personal watercraft and we skipped the sanding and buffing and it was only noticable when you got really close. So it all depends on how nice you want it to look.
