  3. This brand in normaly not available here.

It is called HALDI or HOLUD here.

You can get raw Haldi roots in vegetable markets which can be pasted and used for similar purpose of Kasthuri Manjal.

Dry powdered Haldi is available in grocery shops but that is mostly with added chemicals.

I do not know the bengali local name of chiraunji (Buchanania latifolia). May be Bengali name is Piyal or Chiranji.

  4. # --- On KASTURI MANJAL

Kasturi Manjal is very much available in Kolkata -- Lake Market area has a small but well stocked shop run by a very elderly person from Palakkad and his son (hope the elder gentleman is still around) -- easy to find -- at the beginning of the side street (I forget the name) right where the fresh vegetable vendors start -- just ask... " Madrassi Dokan Kothhai ? " and locals there will point you to the right shop.

It's a great little shop that carries commonly used items from the South -- Kasturi Manjal is one of those.  BTW.....Lake Market is popular and frequented by a lot of Tamils (Madrasis) for ethnic fresh vegetables as found in Southern India, there are some Madrasi hotels (Dosa/Iddli places) in that area and folks here can also direct you to the shop I mention.

    GREAT NEWS !!!

I was looking at an old address book and found the shop info for you :-

    Kutty Krishnan (original owner)

    MOHAN STORES

PARASAR RD, KOLKATA --29 (at LAKE MARKET)

    033-55344497

Get off at Kalighat and walk two small blocks to Lake Market, if going by Metro.

Some More Info on Kasturi Manjal : Curcuma Aromatica --Wild Turmeric

This plant is sometimes called Cochin turmeric or Kasthuri manjal or yellow zedoary. It is a wild plant of the forests of the Western Ghats and Bengal in India and is sometimes cultivated there for its rhizome, which is used as a flavouring agent and condiment and the source of a yellow dye. This is not true turmeric or haldi which is Curcuma Longa.

So Kasturi Holud might be Amba Haldi/Bana Hald/Jangli Haldi  --- these are actual names for Kasturi Manjal in Hindi -- in Bengal too-- I'm guessing.
