  1. It'll soon be the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland.  It has a very detailed Website, and several documentaries have been made of it.    I mention that because it's also a long tunnel but it faced quite different challenges than the Japanese tunnel.

  2. The longest tunnel in the world at the moment is the Seikan Tunnel in Japan at 53.8 kilometres long (33.5 miles). However, in Switzerlan, we are building the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will have a total lenght of 57.5 kilometres (35.5 miles)

I think that the Wikipedia articles on both Tunnels are quite good - see :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seikan_Tunn...

    and

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotthard_Ba...

However, the Gotthard Base Tunnel also has its own official website:

    http://www.alptransit.ch/pages/e/index.p...

    Hope this has helped,

    S.O.

  3. Yes,Sedrun-Gotthard base tunnel in Switzerland will soon be the world’s longest rail tunnel, one that will stretch 57 kilometers.

  4. That's the "Seikan Tunnel" in Japan.  It is 33.5 miles / 53,850 meters long. Do a web search for "Seikan Railroad Tunnel". It is a book (ISBN: 0823955910) that tells everything you want to know about it.
