  1. firecat_mage what a horrible and inconsiderate thing to say to any parent who is concerned for their child.

You may not know that dyslexia very often runs through families, as I have 4 children all with varying degrees of dyslexia and I have also beeen told that I too have it in a milder form.

Did you know that Tom Crusie ,Jackie stewert and Richard Branson are all dyslexic and have the exact same difficulties would you make the same comments to them if you met them. They have made millions and being dyslexic has never hindered them in their lives

I cannot beleive that there are people out there who just do not think before they speak.

If this poor child has to put up with opinions such as this no wonder things are getting him down.

I do not live in your area ,but the first point of call is to contact your local eduction authorty and ask about their procedures for testing for dyslexia or they often use the word specific learning difficulties.Every parent has the right for these areas to be looked at if they are concerned for their childs welfare and eductaion .They may ask the school to do their dyslexic screening in the school there  has to be someone who can do this as they have to know how to administer the test.

Also ANOTHER way forward is to perhaps contact the uk dyslexic association as they can do testing it can be quite pricey like most things. They also have centers all over the country for private lessons which could be very beneficial to your son and have helped many of my freinds.

All the best to you both and keep asking the LEA to do something for your son.

  2. By the looks of the question it definitely runs in the family.

I suggest you leave ALL you sons education to the people that are halfway intelligent and know what they are doing.

If you are worried about your son at school then TALK TO THE TEACHERS!

  3. If you talk to a counselor or someone in charge at school. They would be able to test your child. I had some problems with my son's speech, he stuttered alot. I went and spoke to the counselor at school about my concerns and they had him go to a speech therapist there for testing.

  4. Either the school your son goes to will know or the local GP or hospital should have contacts. Also the school nurse is possibly a good place to ask?

By the way you might find it good to know, there's been studies showing dyslexic people can learn things they like so Pokemon cards etc. for children apparently were very useful for dyslexics as you make yourself want to learn as its fun.
