I have been to a few places and the uni tasted musty and not that great. (or fresh) I really like it but seeing as how its one of the more pricey sushis I want it to be fresh.

  1. Try Calgary Wasabi

  2. Some of the best and freshest sushi is available from a little, hidden jewel in the city's SE community of Willow Park. It's tucked away in the Willow Park Village shopping complex (along with AMA, a fish market, and Caesar's steakhouse among other things - kind of near Southcentre Mall) and called "Sushi Ginza." I swear, every time I have ever been there the sushi has been nothing short of FANTASTIC. It's artfully and carefully prepared using fresh ingredients. All the staff are wonderful and friendly. I even went on Mother's day and they gave my Mom a free japanese tea set (that was really nice and worth about $25) from their little display of things for sale.

As for the uni there, well it is about the nicest in Calgary. Like you, I enjoy indulging in uni once in awhile and have found other places to be sub-par. Sushi Ginza delivers really fresh tasting uni in a unique and beautiful atmosphere. The decor is a mix of contemporary japanese - there are even little tatami booths lining the walls and a beautiful pond/creek with a cute japanese style bridge over it and a waterfall.

Seriously. Give it a try. :-) It's worth the drive. (luckily, I'm in the SE though anyway so I get to go often! Yay)
