  1. There are no shortage of service opportunities out there. All of these sites provide hundreds of opportunities in just about any given area:

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site, http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/

All list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations.

There's also this government sponsored site, http://volunteer.gov/gov/ which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.

If you want to be a volunteer to help with the consequences of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, you need to register and prepare NOW. Here's a web site where you can register and start your preparation so that you can help the next time disaster strikes:

    http://www.helpindisaster.org/

  2. 'I used to work as a juvenile probation officer and we sent kids to work at the humane society all of the time.  I also let kids work off community service at the school.  They would have to stay after class and help the janitor.  Maybe there's a community even coming up that you could help with.  Maybe a valentine's day party at a senior center or a daddy daughter dance at your community center.  I was pretty lenient.

  3. GoodWill stores, Habitat for Humanity, local churches (ask them if you can do yard work like pick up sticks afeter a storm and sweep the sidewalks)

Try going to the soup kitchen, picking up trash (although it may be embarrassing having police follow you as you walk around town picking up trash), volunteering to read books to children, volunteer talking to the eldery, etc. You could go to:

    www.volunteermatch.org

  5. idealist.org and your local community service org. also try local schools, colleges and universities if you are enrolled.

  6. Boys and Girls club.. maybe you can relay your story to mischievious children there.. I know, I was one of them.

  7. the girl I used to date had to do some community service when she was a minor for the horrible drug charge of "use of paraphanelia" because she admitted she had smoked pot earlier.

She did do her community service at the animal shelter. I'm sure your local humane society would be happy to help you fulfill your hours. They can always use the help, and this is rewarding work too. You get to help the animals instead of something tedius like picking up sticks or doing yardwork, etc.

That would be the first place I'd go to do community service.

And please girl, learn from this mistake. I wish I would've learned when I was young and kept getting slaps on the hand. It took a 21 month sentence in prison to straighten my life out! For real! Good luck and remember:

Compassion is the key to happiness. Keep volunteering even when you don't have hours. It feels so good to do something, and will look good to future employers too!
