  1. I think they are called Green Dot Cards

The only place I know I CVS & Walgreens

  2. All-Access Visa prepaid debit cards can be bought at Safeway stores nationwide.

  3. WalMart, gas stations. But read the fine print on all of them carefully. Some charge interest when you spend, some when you don't, some to start, some every month for no reason at all.

  4. They are called secured credit cards and most banks offer them.

  5. There are two kinds: prepaid credit cards and secured credit cards.

Prepaid cards are pretty much gift cards you can use anywhere. You set the limit, and it will go through until you hit 0.

A secured credit card is different: basically you open a special savings account at your bank and set the balance. That balance becomes your credit limit. If you start with $500 your card has a $500 limit. It's a revolving line meaning you can use it, pay it off, and use it again. The really cool thing is that it reports to your credit just like an unsecured credit card, so if you use it properly and pay your bill you can build credit and eventually get an unsecured credit card - then you get your secured amount (your $500 in this case) back. There is interest charged if you don't pay your balance in full every month, and most have an annual fee so be sure to pay attention to all the details.

If you simply don't want to carry cash, get a prepaid card. If you want to build credit so you can eventually get good rates on regular credit cards, home and car loans, and other financing, get a secured card.
