Where can i play dungeons and dragons online?(board game)?

WotC (the makers of D&D) are supposed to be releasing an "online tabletop" to play D&D 4th edition online.  However, there's really no telling how far in the future that will be, and it will carry a monthly fee when it comes out.

Right now, there are several open source game table products that provide tools for online games.  People will use forums - like the official WotC boards at www.wizards.com/dnd or those at rpg.net to set up games.

People also plat chat games at the WotC chat room, but its been closed for maintenance and there's no telling when or if it will reopen.
