  1. You can get a basic stand alone scaler for about $500 (See link), but I doubt this will appeal as a cost effective solution.

Your HDTV will upscale, but most TVs have fairly poor scalers so a good upscaling DVD player will do a better job.

Oppo make among the best, but they cost ~$180 -- ~$230 depending on model. Soooooo ... your next best bet is a HD DVD player (e.g. Toshiba HD-A3). They upscale DVDs almost as well as the oppo models, plus play HD DVDs as a bonus. At Amazon you can buy one for $180 and it comes with 10 free HD disks.

One caveat ... you need an HDMI input on your HDTV.

Not a bad deal really. With HD DVD disks costing about $20-$30, the 10 free ones essentially pay for the player (of course you have to want the movies, or be prepared to sell them).

    Anyway, one option to consider.

  2. Two popular ones are the iScan and iScan pro.

But up-scalers run $500 - $15,000 each (with Runco being the upper end).

You are better off getting the Toshiba HD-A3 which upscales standard DVD's and is a HD-DVD player. It retails for about $205.

Also - your TV has a built-in upscaler/deinterlace system. So you would be buying an out-board system to do something you already have.

  3. at a store

  4. Save Your money.

Your HDTV has already an upscaler built in!!

It is also probably better than the ones included in cheap DVD players.
